Graduate Profile: Kristen Mappin

I was initially enrolled in Zoology, but after first year I decided that I enjoyed Botany more. After gaining work experience with an environmental consultant (and later casual work) I realised that I'd found my passion.

Of all the subjects I studied, I enjoyed Plant Physiology the most. Undertaking this subject led me to volunteer to assist with field work for a PhD student (and later undertake an Honours project). I can't recommend volunteering enough. It really is a great experience and helps to solidify what you are taught in lectures and labs, as well as being a great chance to meet new friends and travel.

The major highlight of my degree though would have to be Honours. It was an incredibly hard year, but it was definitely a great experience. I was able to design my own project and devoted a lot of time to field work, which I've discovered I can't live without. My Honours year also provided the opportunity to be a part of a research team - which was a great experience.

There is a lot of work involved in a science degree, but its worth it in the end. Don't stress too much and enjoy the experience!!
