Welcome to the School of Plant Biology in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at The University of Western Australia, located in the city of Perth.  UWA is a member of the 'Group of Eight' Universities, a prestigious group that receives over 70% of national research grants.

Fast Facts About the School

  • We have over 85 staff and 101 postgraduate researchers from all over the world
  • We have an annual budget of nearly $11 million
  • Our researchers generate over $7 million annually in research funds
  • Our researchers published 142 papers in refereed journals in 2006
  • Head of School Professor Hans Lambers (plant physiology and conservation biology), Emeritus Professor John Pate (plant ecophysiology) and Professor Steve Powles (herbicide resistance in plants) are on the ISI Highly Cited Researchers list, putting them among the top 0.5% of researchers in plant and animal science worldwide.
  • We are ranked well above the national average in citations per paper in plant and animal science and agricultural sciences, and are the top in both categories among Western Australian institutions.

The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences was recently named the top Agriculture Faculty in Australia, and one of the top 50 in the world, based on strength of research publications.  Plant biologists at UWA have contributed strongly to this reputation.

The School has three key areas for research and postgraduate supervision:

  • Marine Systems
  • Terrestrial Natural Systems

 

Latest News

  • At the Convocation Awards Ceremony in October 2007 four of our Postgraduates received Travel Awards for 2008.  Congratulations to: Parwinder Kaur, Diana Tan, Renee Tuckett and Inge Tvede.
  • Congratulations to Shane Friesen on gaining an assistant Professor tenurable position at North Dakota State University straight out of his PhD!!
  • UWA has been rated 37th in the Top 100 world universities in Life and Agriculture Sciences in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University rankings for 2007 making UWA the highest internationally ranked   Australian University in this category.
