Prof. Powles is leader of a multi-disciplinary research team focussed on many different aspects of the phenomenon of herbicide resistance in weedy plant species as well as crop species.  Research extends from understanding the biochemical and molecular basis of resistance, elucidating the effect of resistance mutations on plant performance and simulation modelling and agronomic research to manage resistance in cropping systems.

Student projects can range from the molecular and biochemical through to agronomy,  agro-ecology and simulation modelling.

Prof. Powles is the Chairman of GTTAC, the technical committee advising the Federal Gene Technology Regulator on genetically modified (GM) organisms.
